In this article, Alistair Hayward-Wright, Managing Director from the leading accountancy and advisory firm, Hayward Wright, shares his views on the role an accountant can play in helping you grow your business.

When people think of accountants, they often picture compliance, annual accounts, tax returns, and audits. The truth is that the role of an accountant has evolved far beyond this. Today, the right accountant is not just a number cruncher but a strategic partner, helping businesses unlock growth, navigate uncertainty, and build for the future.

From compliance to growth partner

The accountancy profession has changed significantly over the past 20 years. Where once the role was dominated by statutory audits and end-of-year reporting, accountants now take on a far more advisory position. A good accountant will bring a breadth of experience across industries and business models, often acting as a general practitioner for their clients’ financial health.

This shift has created a huge opportunity for business owners: to see their accountant not as a necessary cost, but as an enabler of growth. The risk of treating accountancy as “just compliance” is clear; without forward-looking advice, businesses can find themselves stuck in reactive mode, making decisions without the insight needed to avoid pitfalls or seize opportunities.

Turning data into decisions

Financial data is only useful if it’s understood and applied. A good accountant doesn’t simply provide a profit and loss statement – they translate the numbers into a format that makes sense to you and your key stakeholders. That could mean dashboards with real-time insights, forecasts that highlight cashflow pinch points, or scenario modelling that shows the impact of strategic decisions.

With cloud-based technology, financial information can now be almost real-time. Rather than looking back at what happened six or twelve months ago, you can view your accounts as a living document, evolving alongside your business and providing clarity when it matters most.

This level of financial insight enables better, faster decision-making. It allows leaders to plan with confidence, allocate resources wisely, and react quickly to changes in the market.

Tackling barriers and unlocking growth

Every growing business hits roadblocks, whether that’s cashflow pressures, pricing challenges, or the need to secure investment. An accountant plays a key role in spotting these barriers early and helping to overcome them.

A strong accountant not only analyses the problem but also connects you with solutions. That might involve introducing you to funders, preparing the right information to support an investment pitch, or working with recruiters to ensure your people strategy is financially sustainable.

For example, I worked with a creative services business that had been trading successfully for three years. The founders wanted to move from project-based work to securing larger, retained contracts. We built a financial plan around making this shift over an 18-month period, helped them design a people strategy, and introduced them to a recruiter who supported them in expanding their team from one employee to six. By modelling salary commitments and projecting future revenues, we gave them the confidence to invest in growth.

Beyond the technicals, accountants also act as a sounding board. Running a business can be isolating, and many business owners value having a trusted adviser who understands their sector, knows their numbers, and can provide a balanced perspective.
